Stages of a photo setup – more pics from the Plate to Page Workshop!

„Will you show some more pictures from the Plate to Page Workshop?“ If you ask so nicely, of course I will.

After a short theoretical introduction on the first day of the „plate to Page“ workshop in Somerset we started with the photography exercises. In teams of two, we used the kitchen as a natural props room to make a photoset according to our ideas and take pictures of our set-up. Together with Spandana, I began to take pictures of the green asparagus from The Garlic Farm.  Our instructors considered it important that the food and the ingredients are photographed exactly as they are, ie without „treatment with spray paint, food coloring or something similar! This corresponds to my belief. We had the green asparagus two days later for the goodbye dinner  it was delicious!
Here is my photo that I like best from this shooting, photographed from above:
Und hier die Entwicklungsstufen dieses Fotos:
And here are the stages of this photo:

We went on with another free photography exercise in which we have done the styling ourselves. This image is my favorite:
It took us some time to get to this setup. Some things you just have to try and look at later on the camera screen. Only then will you realize, for example, that a photo from the overhead perspective looks silly if the decorative milk jug is empty, and that less is more and you don´t need the colorful napkin  😉
On the second day of the workshop we focused in particular on the light and the matching camera settings. Meeta styled this scene for us. The aim was an atmospheric, moody picture to set the scene for the caviar „caviart“ from the Plate to Page sponsor Gourmelli. My favorite picture is this one:
Although the frame for the photo was set, I needed a few shots until I found the right camera angle and the right perspective. Here are the intermediate steps:
After the moody, atmospheric image we went for the exact opposite! Ilva styled this bright, fresh setup to set the scene for the plate to Pagesponsors Somerset Capricorn Goat Cheese and Halen Mon. The goat cheese was delicious by the way! My best image from this series:
In this exercise, I realized that too much light can also be a problem. The first photos were hopelessly overexposed, until I slowly found the right camera settings:
„Photography is painting with light  and the control of  light is an important factor for good pictures. Especially in low light situations it’s good to know how much you can still get out of the photos. There was also an exercise for low light situations. I wil write about this next time – if you are still interested?

    LG
    Bettina

  2. Oh wow – what a great post! It's so interesting reading about how you experienced our workshop as a participant, and to see how your photography and styling progressed – I remember watching you and Spandana taking some of those photos 🙂 Hugs from London!

    LG

  4. Mensch super!!!

  6. Julianne! Echt super. It was great reading and seeing the stages from your perspective. I've always wondered how hour participants soak up the information we give them and this post highlights it so well. This made my day! So glad you joined us and I got to know you at Maere Court! Hugs!

    Petra

  8. I love this post! As a writer and not one especially talented at food styling, I love and appreciate these series of photos! Helpful and so cool! I am thrilled you took away so much from P2P!!! Loving your posts!

  9. Thank you all for your lovely comments! I´m happy you like the pictures as much as I do. I will publish another blogpost about the workshop the next days!

    Juliane
